Construction work has begun on a major wind power plant project in Laos following the signing of a loan agreement of close to USD 700 million.

Titled the Monsoon Wind Power Project, this will be the largest wind power project in Southeast Asia with a capacity of 600 MW, consisting of 133 wind turbines and spread over 1,000 hectares of concession land. This ambitious project is being executed after a USD 692.55 loan agreement was signed between Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the Monsoon Wind Power Company.

A leading renewable energy solutions provider in Asia, Energy Asia Development (IEAD), a corporation registered in Thailand, is the developer of the Monsoon Wind Power project.

Located in the hilly areas of Sekong and Attapeu provinces, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 meters above sea level, the project is expected to be completed by 2025 and is contracted to export electricity to Vietnam for a period of 25 years.

Lao Economic Daily reports that this would be a clean energy project without negative environmental impact, which would also contribute to supporting the global mission of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050. In all likelihood, this project has the potential to offset over 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

Currently, Laos is home to 81 hydrology power, 8 solar energy, 4 biomass, and 1 geothermal energy power plant with a total installed power of 11,661 megawatts and an annual electricity generation of approximately 58,813 KWs (kilowatt hours).
